Month of Mary
The month of May is the "month which the piety[1] of the faithful[2] has especially dedicated[3] to Our Blessed Lady[4]," and it is the occasion for a "moving tribute[5] of faith[6] and love which Catholics[7] in every part of the world pay[8] to the Queen of Heaven[9]. During this month Christians[10], both in church and in the privacy[11] of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent[12] and loving homage[13] of prayer and veneration[14]. In this month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to us from her throne[15] in greater abundance[16]" (Paul VI[17]: Encyclical[18] on the Month of May, no. 1).
This Christian custom[19] of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin[20] arose[21] at the end of the 13th century[22]. In this way, the Church[23] was able to christianize[24] the secular feasts[25] which were wont[26] to take place at that time. In the 16th century, books appeared and fostered[27] this devotion[28].
